As we have expanded our wedding business throughout 2016 we thought it would make good sense to look to develop our ever improving business relationships with our local wedding venues. Wedding Coordinators, as we know, play a crucial role in ensuring everything runs smoothly on the day. As we also know, that comes with very careful planning and planning well in advance.
With that in mind we decided to interview our local coordinators to get a bit of an insight into what they do and what makes them tick! As some of you may be aware our studio is 100 yards from The Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port, so we made this as our first port of call!
Michelle Wilson, Wedding Coordinator at The Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port took time out of her busy schedule to talk to us.
Q. How long have you been doing this role Michelle?
“In total I’ve been in this type of role for just over 8 years. 3 1/2 years as wedding coordinator in Ellesmere Port. I started after leaving college, taking a little time out to work abroad”.
Q. What does a typical day look like for you?
“Well I deal with emails first thing. I spend time updating Social media, including Facebook.” The Holiday Inn has a very visible presence online and makes effective use of both FB and Twitter. “Organising appointments, follow up calls and show rounds. I also liaise with suppliers – it’s important to have excellent relationships with everyone involved in making it a very special day” Whenever possible, Michelle will be available on the day of the wedding.
Q. What in your opinion makes a good wedding venue?
“ Pleasant Ceremonial and Reception rooms and a nice bar to relax in and have a drink is very important too. A good location for photos is also a major consideration. An easy to find location for guests is also an important feature and Bedrooms for any guests wanting to stay over and have a drink” Not surprisingly The Holiday Inn Ellesmere Port meets all these criteria!
Q . What changes have you seen over the time you have been involved in the business?
“Fashions are always changing when it comes to weddings. When I first started Cadbury Purple and fishbowls were in! Now it’s laces, pastels, logs, jars and anything shabby chic. One of the major changes is that weddings are far more informal these days. Twilight wedding packages have also become more popular and Evening Receptions are more fun with Photo Booths and LED Dance Floors”.
Q. So what does the future look like for The Hotel?
“We have had a very busy 2016 and bookings for next year are ahead of plan. The hotel is looking at upgrading the bedrooms and is continuously looking to improve at every opportunity. We are always looking to build the (wedding) business and improve our packages wherever we can. For example we now have an LED dance floor that people can add to their package”.
Q What do you most enjoy about the role?
“I feel very privileged to be involved in planning a couple’s wedding. I am usually the first to be in tears on the day as often I’m the first to see the Bride in her dress! Having worked closely with my brides I find it very rewarding to see everything come together on the Big Day!”.
Your favourite drink? I love a Coffee and during the day I drink Vimto, when I go out I love a Cocktail or two
Favourite food? I love Chilli Tacos
What do you like to do in your spare time? Spend time with my family I also love to go out dancing.
Anything unusual your brides may not know about you? I lived in Ibiza for three years
Who’s at home? (Jason, children, dog?) etc. I live at home with my husband Jason – we have been together almost 8 years and got married last March.
